 The  novella is set in a mansion near Whitby  in 1897. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in North Yorkshire. It is located at the mouth of the River Esk, where the North York Moors meet the Yorkshire Coast, and has a maritime, mineral and tourist economy. The town has a strong literary tradition. Part of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula was set in Whitby, incorporating pieces of local folklore, including the beaching of the Russian ship Dmitry.
