The author of this story is George R Sims. George Robert Sims (2 September 1847 – 4 September 1922) was an English journalist, poet, dramatist, novelist and bon vivant.

This is a story by CL Pirkis. Catherine Louisa Pirkis (6 October 1839 – 4 October 1910) was a British author of detective fiction and animal welfare activist. Throughout her career as a writer, Pirkis would sometimes write under the name of C. L. Pirkis, to avoid gender association.

This is a collection of detective stories involving women detectives in the Victorian period. The prologue is very interesting as we learn certain facts about the period.
When we first meet Bea, she is living in Maida Vale, London. Affluent Maida Vale is a residential neighbourhood with elegant Victorian houses and wide, quiet roads.

The novel is set in 1892 in Jerez de la Frontera. Jerez de la Frontera is a city and municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Located in southwestern Iberia, it lies on the Campiña de Jerez, an inland lowland plain crossed by the Guadalete River, midway between the Atlantic Ocean, the Guadalquivir river and the western reaches of the Subbaetic System.
The novel is set in the area in northern Spain called Baztan. This area is in Navarra and the river Baztan flows through it. Baztan is a municipality from the Chartered Community of Navarre. It is located 58 km from Pamplona, the capital of Navarre. It is the largest municipality in Navarre, with around 376.8 km2 and just over 8,000 inhabitants.
