The book starts in July 1914, and it concerns the family Hunter.
Edward and Beattie Hunter live in a country house near London. They have five children, David, Diana, Bobby, Sadie, William and Peter. Sadie is sixteen and still enjoys the joys of childhood, but there are hints that she needs to think about the future and marrying. Her sister Diana is a beauty, and she has set her sights in Charles Wrougton, Viscount Dene, whose parents live nearby. Her cousin Jack is giving a talk about one of his travels, and the Hunters have invited many locals, including the Wroughtons. At first Diana is disappointed when Charles doesn't turn up, but he finally appears for the meal after the talk. We get to know Charles as someone who is very serious and shy, and his parents want him to marry Lady Helen Hale, who Charles hates. When he met Diana at a party in London, he felt she was different to many of the women he knows, and that is why he wanted to come to the Hunters' gathering. He knows that Diana is not of his league and his parents may disapprove of his falling for the banker's daughter, but it seems that he intends to pursue her.
