In the next chapter the woman in focus is Anna Gould, a heiress whose father's dealings were shady and harm the family's reputation.
Anna Gould (June 5, 1875 – November 30, 1961) was an American socialite and heiress as a daughter of financier Jay Gould.
She got engagement to Oliver Harman briefly. When she went to buy her trousseau in Europe, she met Paul Ernest Boniface de Castellane, who she liked instantly and she broke off the engagement. Marie Ernest Paul Boniface de Castellane, Marquis de Castellane (February 14, 1867 – October 20, 1932), known as Boni de Castellane, was a French nobleman and politician. Ernest was a fortune hunter, and during their marriage he spent Anna's money a galore and kept many mistresses.
Boni and Anna eventually got divorced and later she married Boni's cousin, the Prince of Sagan.
The next chapter is called 'Virginia' and concerns two families.
Virginia Bonynge was the daughter of William Daniel and Rodie Stephens, but her father got involved in an incident and killed a man, and as a consequence he was sentenced to life. Her mother met Charles William Bonynge, and she divorced Daniel and married Charles, who raised Virginia as his own.
Bonynge became broker to John William Mackay, one of the Big Bonanza kings. John William Mackay (November 28, 1831 – July 20, 1902) was an Irish-American industrialist who rose from rags to riches. Born into abject poverty and raised in the slums of New York City, Mackay became one of the four Bonanza Kings. In 1873,the greatest ore body ever found in North America was discoverd by his company, known as the "Big Bonanza".
He married a young widow, Marie Louise Bryant, who became more and more ambitious as he became richer and richer. Marie Louise did not feel Virginia City was suitable for her socially, and she moved first to San Francisco, then to New York, then to Paris, and finally to London, where she and the Bonynges had feud through the press. A London paper revealed that Rodie Bonynge was divorced, which meant she had to stay home while her daughter was presented, a huge embarrassment they attributed to the Mackays. In turn, the Bonynges provided some details of Louise Mackay’s past as a laundress in Virginia City.
Ronnie Greville was engaged to Virginia, but broke off the engagement when he discovered who Virginia's real father was.
Virginia eventually married George William Coventry, the 15th viscount Deerhurst.
