Summer Wives - Facts

The novel is set on Winthop Island, and the author tells us that this fictional island is based on Fisher Island. Fisher Island is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Miranda and Isobel attended Foxcroft Academy, and it is there that their parents met. Foxcroft Academy is a private preparatory high school located in Dover-Foxcroft, Piscataquis County, Maine.

When Isobel and Miranda attend a Hawaian party on the island, they wear Muumuus. The muumuu  is a loose dress of Hawaiian origin. Within the category of fashion known as aloha wear, the muumuu, like the aloha shirt, are often brilliantly colored with floral patterns of Polynesian motifs.

Hawaian parties are called luaus. A lūʻau is a traditional Hawaiian party or feast that is usually accompanied by entertainment. It often features Native Hawaiian cuisine,

Miranda planned to go to Mount Holyoke College after the summer in 1951. Mount Holyoke College is a private liberal arts women's college in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

In 1969 the characters watch the moon landing on the television. In 1969 Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land on the Moon.

Miranda was named after a character in The Tempest by Shakespeare, and this is the play that she uses for Tom's party. The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, probably written in 1610–1611, and thought to be one of the last plays that he wrote alone. After the first scene, which takes place on a ship at sea during a tempest, the rest of the story is set on a remote island, where Prospero, a complex and contradictory character, lives with his daughter Miranda, and his two servants: Caliban, a savage monster figure, and Ariel, an airy spirit. The play contains music and songs that evoke the spirit of enchantment on the island. It explores many themes, including magic, betrayal, revenge, and family.
