This novella is set in August 1862.


There is a reference in the book to the Central Pacific Line as Herman Stein is away, visiting his son and travelling by train. The Central Pacific Railroad was a rail company chartered by U.S. Congress in 1862 to build a railroad eastwards from Sacramento, California, to complete most of the western part of the "First transcontinental railroad" in North America. 

George had his lover staying at the Palace Hotel. .The Palace Hotel is a landmark historic hotel in San Francisco.With 755 guest rooms, the original Palace Hotel was at the time of its construction the largest hotel in the Western United States.
