Gabriel is now in Madrid and has found employment with an actress, Pepita González.
Now he is in love with the daughter of Pepita's seamstress, Inés, a fifteen-year-old girl, who proves to be more sensible than he is. Gabriel thinks that fortune may touch him and one day he may become a powerful figure like Godoy.
Now since he works for Pepita, Gabriel is witness to the conversations and business of actors. For example, Pepita sends him to boo and heckle with others in the opening night of Moratin's 'El sí de las niñas'. Gabriel thinks that the play is good but he has to go along what his mistress has told her.
Pepita is friendly with some noblewomen, who Gabriel names with fictitious names, Lesbia and Amaranta. Pepita invites them to her home alongside Isidoro Maiquez, her fellow actor. There Amaranta's uncle talks about the Napoleonic wars and how Godoy tried to negotiate with Napoleon at the same time that he had dealings with the British.
