Valentine's Day 1946 2 - The End (Pages 18 - end)

 RATING: OKAY

SPOILERS!!!

I have to say that I didn't enjoy this part as much as the Christmastime series. The two plots in the novel concern a group of characters: Lillian, Charles, their children and their acquaintances, and Kate and her family.

Kate's daughter, Jessica, has decided that Mr Abe Creight and Anne Fletcher could be good together as they are both lonely after losing their sons in the war. When Jessica's intentions are evident, both Abe and Anne are not pleased. Yet, Jessica won't get dissuaded to persevere, and somehow Mr Creight and Mrs Fletcher start talking, and that leads to the beginning of a friendship as they really are quite similar. They realise they have nobody to share their fears and feelings with, and they start talking, and they eventually get together.

Jessica's brother, Paul, has been playing the field since he returned from war. During the war he corresponded with a local girl, Lucille, and he confesses to his sister Ursula that he and Lucille shared deep feelings. Yet, after returning from the war he felt he needed to get away from her, who represented that time during the war. Now he misses her, but when he asks her to go to the Valentine's dance with him, she refuses as she feels hurt after he snubbed him. Then during the dance they finally talk.

In New York Gabriel prepares some party to attract new customers for Mr G in the curio shop, and he has brought everybody to cooperate. Charles has announced that he is trying to find a house as they need more space since Charlotte was born. Lillian is delighted but is also worried because moving out of the flat would mean to say goodbye to her friends. Then the day of the party at the curio shop, Charles, who has realised that Lillian needs her friends with her, shows a bigger flat in the neighbourhood which they could move to, which would mean being close to their neighbours and friends.

This was a sweet read, but it wasn't as good as the other stories in the original series.
