Gabriel is now living in the same lodgings after he follows Don Diego, the man who intends to marry Inés, to Madrid.
Don Diego is a man of routine and enjoys the pleasures of the capital. He goes to brothels and cafés to talk about politics. And he also spends too much money. He owes money to Mr de Cuervatón, a neighbour of Gabriel's.
At home Gabriel is witness of the discussions between don Roque, a belligerent neighbour who claims to know what is going on because he reads the weekly newspapers, and Gran Capitán.
