Paris 3 (Pages 150 - 189)

SPOILERS!!!

In 1887 Thomas starts working on the construction of the Eiffel Tower and decides to get some lodgings near the site. One day when she is on his way back home, she sees two women coming out of the new Lycee Janson de Sailly. They are the cleaners, and Thomas recognises the girl who he saw during Victor Hugo's funeral and was trying to find. Thomas then starts to follow her some days, and he finally makes contact. Her name is Edith, and at first she is not welcoming, but then she agrees to see him regularly.

Edith tells Thomas that she works at the lycee with her mother, and she also goes to her Aunt Adeline, who works for a lawyer, Monsieur Ney. Her father left one day and they do not know where he is. The relationship deepens, and Thomas takes her to meet his family. Luc says that he can tell that she doesn't like him. Then Edith takes him to meet her aunt and mother, and they go to the place where her aunt Adeline works and lives. The place is an old house where Monsieur Ney hires rooms to old people, and Edith's mother tells him that Monsieur Ney is very good, and when the old people die, they often leave their money to him. Thomas thinks that Ney takes advantage of these people, especially when he sees the shabby rooms where an old lady lives. His comment does not sit well with Aunt Adeline, and when Thomas leaves, he overhears her tell Edith that she does not think that Thomas is a good match for him.

After that, Edith stops seeing Thomas, and he tries to focus on his job, but he misses her too much. Luc tells him to go and find her. When there is a picnic on the site of the Eiffel Tower, Thomas takes Luc, and they see Edith with Monseur Ney and his daughter, Hortense. The man wants to meet Monsieur Eiffel, and Thomas agrees to introduce the two men. After that, Edith and Thomas starat seeing each other again, and Edith even allows him to kiss her.

I don't know what to think about Edith. I think she is not very forthcoming, and maybe Thomas will be disappointed.
