SPOILERS!!!
During the Great War some of the characters are involved. Thomas loses his younger son, and Robert, the eldest, returns wounded, and both of them run Luc's tavern.
Roland de Cygne and Jacques Le Sour have a confrontation during the war. Jacques is one of the officers who lead the mutinies in the army, and Roland is in charge of the court martials. Yet, his superiors think that they need to punish only a few, and Jacques's action is not considered punishable by death. Then Roland and Jacques find themselves alone. Roland recognises him as the man who wanted him dead, and he challenges to kill him now, but he only wants a favour: Jacques should send Roland's son the lighter that Roland has had throughout the war. Then Jacques turns on his heels and leaves.
Marc's brother, Gerard, dies, and he is left in charge of the department store. Marc does designs, and during the war he is called to a meeting because the government fears they will be bombed. The idea is to have a complete blackout, and build a fake Paris to deceive the Germans. Yet, that never happens as the war finishes.
James Fox, who is a lawyer, receives the visit of Louise, a young woman who has discovered that he is adopted and that James's firm arranged the adoption. Louise is the daughter that Marc had with Corinne Petit, and James arranged for Corinne to have the child and then he got her a job, and he also found a couple for the baby. James tells Louise that he can't tell her anything as his client is her father. Then someone runs to the office, saying that the war is over, and everybody goes out on the street where the crowds are celebrating. Then Louise has the idea of returning to the office and find the files. James catches her red-handed, and since Louise has her birth certificate, naming Corinne as her mother but no name is given about her father. James explains that Corinne died some years ago, and he can't tell her anything about her father.
After the war finishes, James dies of the Spanish flu, and Marie and her daughter Claire travel to France, and they decide to remain there. Claire takes the reins of the department store, when her brother tells her that they may have to close down. Claire is a good businesswoman, and Claire also starts working. At a party thrown by Marc, Marie comes across Roland, who tells her that he is a widower with a son, and then he invites her to the opera. Will they get to have the relationship that they couldn't in the past? I would like to know what happened to the American artist that Marie was so in love wtih.
