In Her Tracks - Characters

  • Tracy Crosswhite (44) is the main character. Tracy used to be a chemistry teacher in high school but when her sister Sarah isappeared, she retrained and became a policeman. Tracy married her boyfriend, Ben, but they divorced when Tracy became obsessed with her sister’s disappearance. In the first book of the series after Sarah’s grave was found, Tracy thought that the man convicted for the crime was not the real culprit and a procedure started with new evidence about the irregularities of the first trial. Tracy finally learnt that she was wrong and the man was actually guilty and she almost got killed. Tracy started a relationship with Dan O’Leary, her childhood friend, when they got reacquainted in the first book. Now Tracy is married to Dan, and they have a daughter called Daniella Sarah. In this book she returns to work after maternity leave and gets the surprise that she has been replaced and Nolasco has no intention to remove her replacement. So she starts working on cold cases. 
  • Dan O’Leary (44) is Tracy’s childhood friend and now husband. Dan moved out of Cedar Grove before Sarah’s kidnapping. After that, he became a lawyer and got married. When his wife cheated on him with his partner, Dan returned to his childhood town to look after his mother and start a new life. Dan’s mother died, and he made life in Cedar Grove. Dan took the case of Edmund House after Tracy told him about the irregularities in the trial. After that, Dan and Tracy started a relationship. Now they are married and have a baby daughter.
  • Daniella Sarah O’Leary (1) is Tracy and Dan’s daughter.
  • Roger is Tracy’s cat.
  • Rex and Sherlock are Dan’s dogs.
  • Therese is Tracy's Irish nanny.
  • Kinsington (Kins) Rowe (42) was Tracy’s partner, and the detective Tracy trusts the most. He is married and has three children, and in a previous book his marriage went through a bad patch and he even considered having an affair, but nothing happened, and he decided to fight for his marriage. Now Kinns misses his three children who have left home for university. 
  • Vic Fazzio (Faz) is one of the men in Tracy’s A-team. He is Italian and boasts about it. He is married to Vera and has a grown-up son, Antonio. Faz was very upset  when his wife is diagnosed with breast cancer, but she recovered. Faz and his wife are Daniella's godparents.
  • Vera Fazzio is Faz’s wife. She and Vic are Daniella's godparents
  • Delmo Castigliano (Del) is another detective in the A team. He is divorced, and he and Faz are partners. In a previous book Del went through a terrible ordeal when his young niece died of an overdose, and he was determined to find the person who supplied the drugs and caused her death. Del is now dating the prosecutor, Celia McDaniels.
  • Captain Johnny Nolasco is the captain of the Violent Crimes Section and Tracy’s boss. He is not very nice to her because years ago when she was training to be a cop, he was demonstrated how to search a suspect, and Nolasco grabbed her breasts and Tracy slapped him and broke his nose. Now Nolasco is her boss, and he is continuously putting her down. Nolasco goes against her all the time. In a previous book Tracy discovered that ten years ago Nolasco and his partner manipulated an investigation and an innocent man was convicted, so he and the cases where he was involved were thoroughly investigated. Yet, he is still in charge, and in this book when Tracy is back from maternity leave, he tells her that her place has been covered and he can't tell the detective who replaced her to go, so she is offered to take over the cold case department.
  • Mike Melton (Grizzly Adams/Oz) is the director of the Washington State Patrol crime lab. He is married and has six daughters.
  • Lisa Walsh is Tracy's counsellor. 
  • Kelly Rose is a forensic anthropologist
  • Kaylee Wright is a crime-scene analyst.
  • Rick Cerrabone is the senior King County prosecuting attorney.
  • Maria Fernández is the detective who replaced Tracy in the A-team when Tracy went on maternity leave. When Tracy returns, Nolasco decides that Fernandez should stay and Tracy has to be relegated. At the end of the book, yet, María Fernández finds a position in another team. 
  • Detective Sergeant Billy Williams is the sergeant in charge of the A-team.
  • Henry Johnson is the A-team's fifth wheel.
  • Sergeant Dale Pinkney is from the CSI.
  • Andrei Vilkotski is from the technical and electronic support unit. 
  • Shannah Rowe is Kins’s wife.
  • Art Nunzio (58) used to be the officer in charge of the cold cases department.
  • Roy Calloway (63) was the sheriff of Cedar Grove. He knew that Edmund was the culprit, but he had no evidence, so he, the prosecutor and Sarah’s father decided to fabricate the evidence. Twenty years later when Edmund was released thanks to Tracy and Dan, Roy almost died when the man attacked him. Roy is now retired but after the new chief of the police, Finlay, lost his wife, he replaced him while he was on compassionate leave.
  • Finlay Armstrong is the new chief of the police in Cedar Grove. Tracy and Roy investigated the murder of his wife, and he almost died when ther murderer shot him.  
  • Leah Battles is Dan's associate.
  • Antonio Fazzio is Faz’s son. He has a restaurant which he has named after his father. 
  • Celia McDaniel (42) is a prosecutor who helped Del in the investigation of his niece’s death. Celia lost her son to drugs as well. Now she and Del are in a relationship.
  • Stuart Funk is a medical examiner.
  • Chief Sandy Clarridges is Tracy and Nolasco’s superior.
  • Bennett Lee is the public information officer.
  • Maria Vanpelt is a reporter who is always after morbid news. Tracy doesn’t like her, and Nolasco leaks information to her when he wants to damage Tracy in her work or personally.
  • Maggie Marcello is Del’s sister. She is divorced and recently lost her daughter to drugs. She also has two twin sons.
  • Stevie Marcello (10) is Del’s nephew.
  • Mark Marcello (10) is Del’s nephew
  • Santino (Sonny) is Del’s dogç
  • Donald Frick is the pathologist.
  • Amanda Santos is an FBI profiler. In a previous book Tracy discovered her and Fins having lunch when he was supposed to be having a meeting with his child’s teacher. Fins confessed that he felt attracted to Amanda and liked her, but nothing happened between them.
  • Andrew Laub is the lieutenant in Tracy’s unit.
  • Stephen Martinez is the assistant chief of criminal investigation.
  • Floyd Hattie used to be Nolasco’s partner.
  • Edmund House is the man who kidnapped and killed Sarah.
  • Sarah Crosswhite was Tracy’s sister, who disappeared at the age of eighteen when she was driving home after a shooting competition. Her car broke down (Edmund had tampered with it) and she started to walk home, and Edmund then kidnapped her. Sarah was kept captive for seven weeks, but Edmund killed her when he found himself against the ropes when the sheriff pinned the blame on her. Sarah’s body was found twenty years later
  • James Crosswhite was Tracy and Sarah’s father. He was a doctor and an honest citizen. When Roy told him about having no evidence to send House to prison, he eventually agreed to be involved in the fabrication of evidence. Roy killed himself when the pain of losing his daughter was too much.
  • Amy Crosswhite was Tracy and Sarah’s mother
  • Ben is Tracy’s ex-husband.

Characters in this book:

  • Bobby Chin (33) is a police officer whose young daughter went missing when he took her to a corn maze on Halloween. Bobby and his ex-wife had many problems, and the little girl was suffering the consequences. Bobby even admitted to hit his wife. He left the police after Elel's disappearance, and now he works for a technological company.
  • Jewel Chin is Bobby's ex-wife. He is not a very well-balanced woman. He did everything to drift Bobby away from his family and friends After the divorce she did everything against him.
  • Gloria is Bobby's brother. She took away Elle as her niece told her how unhappy she was, and Gloria knew that neither of her parents was good for the girl. 
  • Elle Chin is Bobby and Jewel's daughter. At the beginning of the book she is five. Tracy discovers that she has been living in China with her aunt for five years after Gloria decided that she needed to do something to protect her niece. 
  • Graham Jacobsen is Jewel's boyfriend. He started as her fitness instructor. When Tracy starts investigating, she discovers that Jacobsen killed himself a couple of years before. 
  • Stephanie Cole is the young woman who is kidnapped and kept captive by the Sprague Brothers. Actually, it was another neighbour, Bigby, who intended to rape and kill her. Stephanie moved to Seattle from Florida because she felt pressured by her parents, but at the end of the book after she is rescued, she decides to go back home. 
  • Angel Jackson (32) is one of the prostitutes that the Sprague brothers held captive. This is one of the cold cases Tracy investigates.
  • Donna Jones (28) is the second prostitute that the Spragues kidnapped, and Tracy investigated the case. 
  • Franklin Sprague (49) is the oldest of the Sprague brothers. He is the leader, and he has inherited a cruel streak from his late father. He kidnapped a prostitute some years ago and has kept her captive for his own pleasure. Franklin works in a residential home, but he hides this side of his. He is cruel to his brothers, adn when he finds Stephanie in his house, he beats Evan and starts to do everything to hide the truth. At the end of the book he is shot dead by Bigby. 
  • Carroll Sprague (47) is the second brother. He works at Home Depot, and when he gets nervous, he gets a stammer. Carroll has a prostitute of his own, and his older brother also treats him as if he were stupid. Carroll is arrested at the end of the book.
  • Evan Sprague (40) is the youngest brother. He is mentally challenged and his brothers treat him cruelly. We believe throughout the novel that Evan kidnapped Stephanie, but in reality he saved her life. At the end of the book with Franklin dead and Carroll in prison, he eventually goes to live with Lindsay, the girl who the Spragues fostered and Ed Sprague abused. Evan was the only one who treated Lindsay well, and thanks to Evan she managed to escape. 
  • Brian Bibby is the neighbour that calls the police claiming to have seen the missing young woman. Bibby turns out to be the person who intended to abuse and kill Stephanie but Evan interrupted him. Tracy discovers that Bibby and the Spragues' father, Ed, both kidnapped and killed dozens of women for years. 
  • Lindsay Sheppard was the girl who the Spragues fostered. Ed kept her in shackles and abused her, and Bibby did it also. Lindsay now goes by the name of Jessica Whitley, and when Tracy finds her, she tells her everything about Ed and Bibby. It is thanks to Lindsay that Tracy finds the missing women. At the end of the book Lindsay takes in Evan. 
  • Aileen Sheppard/Rodriguez is Lindsay's Sheppard. She grew up in care and for a while she had drug problems, but she recovered. Lindsay found her after escaping the Spragues and she helped her ister to get a new life. 
  • Ed Sprague was the Spragues' father, and he kidnapped and killed women for years, and he buried his bodies eitehr in his basement or in the barn in the cabin in the country.
  • Carol Sprague was the Spragues' mother, someone who was too afraid to do anything. 
  • Scott Barnes (22) is Stephanie's roommate. 
  • James Ingram is the young man working at the corn maze when Elle Chin went missing. He claims to see a little girl going with a Chinese woman willingly. 
  • Bill Miller was the first officer who arrived at the Chin home when Elle disappeared. He tells Tracy that what surprised that Jewel Chin was more worried about accusing her husband than about her daughter. 
  • Evelyn Robertson is the Chins' neighbour, and she was witness to the violence between Jewel and Bobby, and how the little girl was the one to bear the brunt.
  • Anne Diaz is one of Stephanie's colleagues who invited her to a fancy dress party. Stephanie intended to go but she never turned up. 
  • Lorraine Bibby is Bibby's wife. She used to be a teacher. 
  • Nancy Maxwell is another neighbour of the Spragues' and had a camera fitted and in the footage Evan appeared going in the direction of the park where Stephanie disappeared. 
  • Paul Maxwell is Nancy's husband.
  • Lynn Betterico was Elle's teacher.
  • Helen Knezevic is Carrol's boss at Home Depot.
  • Peter Gillespie is a friend of Bobby Chin's. They were fraternity brothers at university.
  • Judge Ken Schwartz is the difficult judge who finally grants a warrant to Kinns. 
  • Pete Peterson is the chief of police of Cle Elum
  • Mack Herr is a police officer in Cle Elum.
  • Brudce Wayne is the Chinese driver who Tracy hires.
