The Body On Archangel Beach - Angela Marchmont 11 - by Clara Benson

SPOILERS!!!

It is June 1931 when Edgar finally leaves the prison after paying his debt with justice. Angela is waiting for him, and they plan to leave for America on the Olympic from Cherbourg. Yet, a reporter keeps bugging them, so Edgar manages to throw him off their scent when he takes Angela to Rhodes for their outstanding honeymoon.

In a hotel in a small town in Rhodes, some characters are staying. There is a dig nearby and a group of archaelogists have the hotel as their headquarters. Things are tense because one of the assistants, Roy, has fallen in love with Sophia Delisi, the wife of one of the archaelogists. He has broken off his engagement to Esther Grayson, and he wants Sophia to leave her husband, Aldo Delisi, but Sophia refuses. He keeps saying that he has a rich friend who has promised to give him a job. Yet, Sophia won't accept. So Roy leaves for Athens as Aldo has sent him to do some job for him. Apart from the archaelogists, there is a writer, Philip Halliday, an invalid woman, Lady Adela Trenoweth and her nurse, Amy Brinkhurst.

Angela and Edgar arrive at the hotel, and they are first welcomed by Miss Brinkhurst, who tells them all the gossip. On that same day there is a new guest, Mr Peterson. Angela gets to hear everything about Roy and Mrs Delisi.

When she is swimming, Angela seems to think that some shape is a body, but then she loses sight of it. The body reappears, and it turns out to be Roy. The police think that it has been an accident. Peterson, who believes himself to be some kind of sleuth, starts pestering Angela, and he thinks that Roy committed suicide.

Angela starts suspecting that there is something fishy in this death, and she starts investigating. She realises that there have been some archaelogical pieces that have been stolen, and she thinks that maybe that is the reason why Roy was killed. Then Miss Brinkhurst is also killed, and Angela suspects that the woman was blackmailing the killer.

One of the fishermen in the village, whose sick father was a notorious forger and friend of Edgar's, finally confesses that it is the second archaelogist, Dr Schulz, who smuggles artefacts to China, but when the police turn up, the man flees. Angela and Edgar find him in Gregorios's house as his son had hidden him, and Dr Schulz confesses to the robberies but he didn't kill Roy or Amy Brinkhurst.

It is Angela who discovers the truth through deduction, and she discovers that Roy expected the visit of his friend, Bill, who wanted him to work for him. That leads her to discover an article about a man who was murdered at the Savoy in London. This part is a bit far-fetched, but Angela deducts that the killer is Peterson. Actually, the man was an old friend of both Roy's and Bill's, but he had been unlucky in life. When he went to see Bill about his bad luck, he got angry at the injustice of life, so he killed Bill in his own room, and the police thought it was him as he was unrecognisable. His real name is Jesse McKirdy. Then he decided to travel to all the places that Bill had already arranged. What he didn't consider was that Roy would go and try to see Bill, so he recognised him. That is why he killed him, and he stayed to see all the excitement his crime would create. Amy discovered who he was because he found a photograph in Roy's trunk.

I have to say that I found the ending implausible, but I loved to see Angela and Edgar again.
