In the last part of the book Fitz reappears. He turns up at Aroha's hotel when she is looking for Vera and discover that she died under strange circumstances. Aroha knows about her father from Linda, but she does not think it is right for her to send him packing. Besides, Bao tells her that in his culture they need to honour their elders. So when Fitz asks them for a job, Ahroha agrees to have hi doing jobs at the hotel. He throws himself into the job enthusiastically. However, after some weeks problems start. Mr McRae tells Aroha that the night before he was in another hotel for a drink and her father was gambling, and the worst thing was that he bet the hotel on the game, and McRae tells her that she needs to look out for her reputation. Aroha thanks the man, and she is ready to talk to her father. Recently, his work at the hotel has taken a turn for the worse, and she has noticed money missing from the till when he was manning the reception. When Aroha confronts Fitz, he acts defensive, and they have an argument, ending with Fitz walking away.
After that, Fitz goes to Dunedin as he wants to avenge Vera because he thinks Robin murdered her. What he does is getting a job as a carpenter in the theatre, but he also makes Helena's acquaintance. Helena is furious that Robin has left her in the lurch. Now Robin is in love with Lucille, and he has intentions to sell the house, so she will have to move to Australia. When Fitz appears, he wins her over, and Fitz tells her that Robin killed the woman he worked for, and Helena believes him.
As Fitz manages to get a job in the theatre as a carpenter, he is privy tot he mechanism that will be used to make the fairies fly. So his plan is to get Lucille and Robin together to check the mechanism, and when the girl gets stuck, Robin will have to get up there to rescue her, and they will fall, and then Fitz will set fire to the theatre. Robin and Lucille find letters, being summoned to the theatre. Fitz's fake letter to Lucille is one of love, and the one Lucille gets is about a last rehearsal. When they find themselves alone at the theatre, Lucille feels brave to show her feelings, and they get together. Yet, when they realise that neither wrote the letters they received, they think that maybe it is a prank from the other actors. When they try the scene, Lucille gets stuck, and as planned, Robin climbs up the contraption torescue her.
Linda and Aroha have arrived in Dunedin to attend the premiere, and when they disembark, Linda thought that she had seen Fitz. Yet, she dismissed the thought. Yet, when they are at the house and ask after Robin and Lucille, the maid and the housekeeper mention two letters, and when Linda mentions Fitz, March recognises the name. The three woman rush to the theatre, and Linda grabs one. On reaching the theatre, they find a terrifying scene. Robin and Lucille are about the jump from the crane, and Fitz is about to drop a lantern to cause a fire. Yet, Linda shoots making him stop. Robin and Lucille get to their feet and decide to run, but Fitz grabs Lucille and threatens her with a knife. Fitz drags her outside, and then when a trolley comes towards them, Lucille manages to jump out of the way, but Fitz does not see it and he is hit and killed.
At the end of the book Robin and Lucille do a brilliant performance at the premiere, and they plan to marry one day. Aroha and Bao are also to get married soon, and she is already pregnant. Peta is to marry Leah too.
I enjoyed the book and learning about new historic events in New Zealand. What I didn't like was that certain behaviours were too modern in my opinion.
