We discover more about Fern. She comes from an upper class family, and she has a boyfriend, James, who is an army officer. Yet, she is not in love with him, and she feels disappointed in the sexual department.
Fern mmets Charlie and from the first moment she feels drawn to him. Charlie lives in the same building as her. Charlie shares a flat with Rob, another student. Charlie is in a relationship with Fabiana, a Spanish student of dance. We discover that life in Manchester has an effect on Fern, who up till now was quite mild in her behaviour. Yet, now she starts drinking and smoking a lot.
Fern and Charlie eventually become lovers. He tells her that he doesn't want her as a girlfriend because then it will become boring. Fabiana is his girlfriend who nags at him and scolds him. While Fern is his lover, the one he feels alive with. Yet, Fern would really like to be Charlie's exclusive woman. Her flatmates tell her that she is not doing right as it is wrong to play with another woman's man. And Jill, a griend from the drama school she has befriended, and Bob, Charlie's flatmate and Jill's boyfriend, think that Charlie is not good news. Jill has even told her that Charlie uses speed, but Jill does not even know what that is, and when Jill explains, Fern doesn't believe her. The signs are there: Charlie sneezes a lot and he sometimes seems to have cold, but Fern is too naive to realise what is happening. All I hope that Charlie's addiction won't affect Fern.
