Moving - Facts

One of the events that mark Edwina's life is when her first husband, Ollie, dies of heart failure when they are spending a happy day on Sennen Beach in Cornwall. Sennen Cove  is a small coastal village in the parish of Sennen in Cornwall.

Kennington is where Edwina's house is. Kennington is a district in south London, primarily located in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Rowena went to Herford College in Oxford. Hertford College, previously known as Magdalen Hall, is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. It is located on Catte Street in the centre of Oxford, directly opposite the main gate to the Bodleian Library.

Fern's parents live in Godalming. Godalming is a market town and civil parish in southwest Surrey.

In the part about Fern she mentions that she and her friends saw the announcement of Lady Diana's engagement to Prince Charles. After six months of dating, then-32-year-old Prince Charles of Wales,  and 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer hosted a press conference  on Feb. 24, 1981, to announce their engagement.

The characters talk about the bombing that killed Lord Mountbatten. Lord Louis Mountbatten was assassinated on August 27, 1979, by a bomb planted by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) on his leisure boat, Shadow V, in Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Ireland. He was accompanied by one of his grandsons, Nicholas, and a local boat boy, Paul Maxwell, who also died in the explosion.

When Fern marries James, they go to Cap Ferrat for their honeymoon. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France.

Fern loses one of the children she was expecting, and she remembers talking to Charlie about vanishing twin syndrome. Vanishing twin syndrome (VTS) refers to a phenomenon in multiple pregnancies where one of the embryos dies in utero and is either partially or completely reabsorbed by the other surviving embryo(s) or the mother's body. This essentially means a twin or multiple pregnancy becomes a singleton pregnancy after one embryo is lost.

Barbara's nursing home is near Holland Park. Holland Park is an area of Kensington, on the western edge of Central London, that lies within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and largely surrounds its namesake park, Holland Park.

At the end of the book Rowena invites her mother to visit her as she and her partner live very close to St Kilda. St Kilda is an inner seaside suburb in Melbourne, six kilometres southeast of the Melbourne central business district.
