DI Lockyer is in charge of the cold cases alongside Constable Gemma Broad.
Then he gets a call from Hedy Lambert, who calls from the prison, saying that she needs to talk to him as she has some important news to tell him. Lockyer goes the next day after visiting his parents, who live on a farm. We learn that Matthew Lockyer's brother was also killed, but the murderer was never found.
When Lockyer talks to Hedi, she tells him that Harris Ferris is back. Little by little we discover that Hedi has been in prison for twelve years for the murder of Michael Brown, who was found dead in the barn of Professor Roland Ferris. Hedi was Ferris's cook, and Brown had been staying in the barn for a few days. Professor Ferris claimed that the man staying in his barn was his son, who he had been estranged from for years. The police discovered that the man was Michael Brown, and Hedi claimed that she had slipped in the blood and fell. That is why she was covered in blood and some of her DNA was found on the body. The crime weapon was the kitchen knive, which Hedi claimed to have washed the night before, and the door was locked so no one could have got hold of the knife. Theat evidence sent Hedy to prison.
Now Hedy tells Lockyer that Harry Ferris is now back at his father's house. A local woman, Cass, who Hedy is still friends with, told her, and she wants Lockyer to reopen the case as the man is now back. She insists he need to find out why his father kept saying that the dead man was Harry, and it is important to discover why he has returned after so many years. Lockyer is not convinced that there is nothing to investigate, especially as the case is closed, but Hedy insists that she is innocent.
A very interesting start. I am already hooked.
