Coming Home 5 (Pages 455 - 530)

SPOILERS!!!

Judith visits her former maid, Phyllis, who has married and has a baby girl. Phyllis is happy to see her, but Judith is disturbed to see the place where lovely Phyllis now lives. Her husband is a miner, and this is the kind of home that workers are assigned. Phyllis tells her that Cyril will volunteer if war breaks out because he has always wanted to go to the sea. That will mean that Phyllis won't be allowed to live in the house any longer, so she will have to return to her mother's. Judith is deeply concerned because that house is already too cramped.

Judith leaves Phyllis with a heavy heart. When she gets to the Warrens, she realises that something is up. Heather is serving in the shop, which she normally doesn't do, and when she reaches the living room, she finds Ellie, their shop assistant in tears. Ellie explains that as it was her day off, she went to the cinema, and during the film the man sitting next to her groped her knee and run his hand up and down her thigh. Judith asks if she saw his face, and Ellie says that she didn't. Then Judith says that they need to talk to the cinema manager and the police to have the man arrested, and she tells the Warrens and Ellie that she knows who this man is because it also happened to her. After going to the police, Judith feels as if a burden has been lifted, and this is the catalyst she needed.

When Judith goes to Nancherrow, she finds the house full. Jeremy has turned up, announcing that he has volunteered and he is paying a visit to bid everybody goodbye. Judith gets to meet Gus, and she realises that her friend is in love, and Gus is not indifferent. And she also learns that Athena and Rupert are getting married.

Loveday plans the afternoon to go to the cove, swim there and have a picnic. Edward tells her that he and Judith need to visit Aunt Lavinia first, and Loveday tells them that they can join them later, and she is going to leave a hamper for them to carry so that she can make sure they don't back out. Edward and Judith visit Aunt Lavinia, who is in good spirits. The woman tells them that before leaving, they need to check the hut, the children's house she has on the property. Edward and Judith go there, and then Edward kisses her and they make love. After that, Judith tells him that she loves him, but Judith gets a shock when Edward says that he is not the man for her. He is too young to be committed, and she should fall for another guy. All he wants is to be friends with her. Judith is aghast and in shock. When they return to the house, Judith says that he should join the others, but she will stay as she has a headache. Edward leaves, and then Judith starts sobbing, sitting on the staircase. Mary, the nanny, finds her, and the woman guesses what has happened to her, and this is something that she has feared all along. Mary tells her that what Judith needs to do is leave. She should phone her Aunt Biddy and tell her that she is arriving today. Mary says that she needs to let go of the Carrey-Lewises because she has been too immersed in the family, and at the end of the day they are not her family. She needs her independence and find her real family. Judith does what she tells her, and before leaving, she goes to see Diana, who is in bed, and tells her that she needs to go to her Aunt Biddy's as she has the flu and is alone.

I have to say that I am surprised by what Edward has done to Judith. I thought he loved her, but he is selfish and conceited. He is not even a good friend!
