Murder in the Family 5 - The End (Pages 306 - end)

 RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

At some point in the book all of the experts are connected to the crime personally.

Bill Serafini was aware that Luke Ryder was an imposter before the start of the TV programme. When he was part of the NYPD, he investigated the death of Fulton, and was after the person who impersonated him. Fulton was killed and impersonated, and then this man stole the identity of the real Luke Ryder.

It is JJ NOrton who discovers the real identity of the victim after analysing a photograph. The photograph shows a young child and his mother before a water tower, and all the experts agree that the photo could be of his real identity. The water tower leads them to Canada, and Norton discovers that the  name of the victim was Jonah McKenna, and there is a sister left, Rebecca, who joined a charity as a nurse, but nobody has heard anything from her. Jonah died or faked his death when he got involved with a married woman and took money from her. Then her husband found out, and that is when Jonah disappeared, and his body was never found.

Alan Cunning is connected to Luke Ryder through a personal matter too. His sister is the woman who Luke got involved with in Greece and left. Luke also took advantage of the woman, Eileen, and Alan knew about it. Alan, though, claims that he never comfronted Luke.

Hugo Fraser, the criminal prosecutor, turns out to be the man who Caroline was having an affair with. He says that Luke had no idea about the affair, and he was unhappy when Caroline broke up with him. Yet, the night of the murder he was at the same dinner as Caroline.

JJ Norton seems to have a link to Caroline as he was adopted and was born in the same year as the child that Caroline had before her first marriage. JJ denies being that baby, but it is not clear whether he told the truth or not.

Laila Furness's maiden name is Khan, the same surname as the young man who was killed in the hit-and-run accident. Laila admits that the young man was her brother, but he also says that the real person who killed his brother confessed on his deathbed.

And Mitchell Clarke, the journalist, who admitted to having been in the house after Luke's death, lied too. Mitchell was in a relationship with Maura, and the day of the crime Maura left the cinema early to be with Mitchell in his flat. Then she got home, and when Mitchell saw the police, he wanted to make sure that Maura was all right, and that is how he foudn himself in the garden and chased by the police. After he sorted out things, Maura broke up with him.

It is after Mitchell's account that they bring about Maura to ask her, and she nervously lets out that the washing machine was on. So she has to admit that Amelie was already there when she came home, and she was washing something full of blood. Maura swore to protect her sister. Amelie is arrested for killing Luke, but that is not the end of the mystery.

Ian Wilson, the man who inherited the money that Luke's grandmother left in her will, comes forward and says that he was there the day Luke was killed. He says that he confronted Luke about the will, but they fought, and Luke fell, but he was not dead. Then Ian left. Yet, before he left, he looked back and saw someone hovering over Luke's body and then he was beaten to death. The experts then say that they discover the murder weapon in the house attic. It was a toy basball bat, which belonged to Guy. It was Guy, who killed Luke. Guy does not remember any of this, but Laila, the psychologist, seems to think that he suppressed that memory, which could be consequence of the trauma of seeing his own father die.

Guy is the murderer, but he may not be prosecuted due to his death at the time of the crime and his mental state. Then a newspaper article tells us how Guy was found dead by Caroline and her carer. The official version is that he died of a heart attack caused by an overdose. Yet, a red-haired woman in a nurse uniform was spotted that night, so that makes us think that the nurse was Jonah's sister, Rebecca, who killed Guy for killing her brother.

I really enjoyed the book, and I found the format quite original and dynamic.
