RATING: GOOD
SPOILERS!!!
I liked the book, but it had too much at the end.
Kate discovers that the thief that robbed Mr Moony is Meriel. When she and Sykes help Meriel with her suitcases as she has been offered a job in Newcastle, they discover an attache case with all the things that went missing from Mr Moony's safe. When Kate confronts her, Meriel says that Lucy asked her to get Miss Fell's ring, and it was temptation that led her to steal the things. And she simply wears men's clothes from time to time to protect herself. Kate is not happy, but she does not think she can take her to the police. Sykes is not pleased as he thinks that a crime is a crime. When they go to Mr Moony to give him back the jewels, the man has no intention to press charges.
From Alison and Rodney, who are to marry soon, Kate finds out that Lucy and Dylan went to rehearse in an old tower. Kate goes there to discover that Dan Root is there, and she overhears him say something about killing someone. When Kate appears, she persuades Lucy to return and confess everything. The captain is relieved to see her back but also upset that she could have done something like that. When Kate confronts the captain about his real identity, he admits that he is Lampton, and Lucy is actually the captain's illegitimate daughter.
Dan Root confesses to killing Mr Milner, but the police have to let him go when it is obvious that the man is lying. We discover later that Dan, who is Elizabeth Bindeman's son, was adopted by the schoolteacher, and he saw Lucy being born on the ship, and he considers her his sister. So that is the reason why he confessed.
Then the captain goes to the police, confesses to killing Milner as he blackmailed him for years, and the he shoots himself. Inspector Charles is happy that they case is closed but Kate still feels that this is not the truth.
That night Inspector Charles goes to have dinner with Kate and her mother, but the latter claims to have a headache, and Kate has dinner with Inspector Charles alone. The night ends with them having a night of passion. Inspector Charles promises to keep in touch and he send Kate a bunch of roses.
Then Kate discovers that she has the clue to the real murderer. The cufflink that she found at the scene is the key, and she goes to the infirmary to confront the killer. It is Dylan, who hating the fact that Milner was harassing Lucy, killed him. However, Kate feels that it won't be possible to prove that, and even though she confronts Dylan, she decides not to say a word.
