SPOILERS!!!
I enjoyed most of the book but the ending was not believable, at least, not for me.
Grant Lockley is portrayed as vulture, resorting to anything for his articles. He tricks Moira into meeting him. Despite being warned against going on the Internet, she checks her emails and finds one from Grant Lockley. He tells her that there is an online forum of a group who think that what happened was a false flag and Ryan could be alive. Even though Moira saw her son's body, his face was badly wounded, and she wonders if Ryan may be alive. So she decides she wants to see Grant.
Her FLO, Amy, calls Helen, explaining that Moira is determined to see Grant. Helen then decides that the police can escort her to the café where she is to see Grant. Things couldn't have gone worse as Moira realises that she has walked into a trap, and Grant is scathing, calling her an accomplice. When McCleod, Helen's boss, learns about the whole thing, he is incensed, and he decides to remove Amy from the case, and he also warns Helen.
Ishbel has left Aidan after Grant's article. Aidan admitted that he has been having an affair with Netta, his dental nurse. After that, she moves to a hotel and takes a few things from Abigail. One of the things is a diary her daughter kept. In the diary she reads about Abigail meeting Jack, how she discovered he was a drug dealer, and she eventually helped him. Abigail mentions Ryan, who was in the students' union, and how he warned her, and Abigail made a formal complaint against him, exaggerating her arguments. Ishbel wonders if that was the reason why he killed her. Ishbel is also hounded by Grant Lockley, who wants to interview her, and he even uses threats to bend her hand, but Ishbel is adamant.
There is a public funeral for all the victims, and everybody is curious to know whether Moira will attend, and most people claim that she has no right. Moira is certain that she won't get involved. Ishbel goes to the cathedral right away as she has decided not to attend the vigil. In the cathedral there is a monitor showing the vigil, and she is surprised to see that Aidan is giving a speech, and she is even more shocked to discover that Netta, his lover, is there next to him. Lockley turns up and she faces him, and once again she refuses to talk to him.
During the service Helen and Amy see Lockley leave, and they follow him. He is talking to some men, and they discover that the men he is talking to are part of an antifeminist faction, and they are wielding placards, saying that Ryan was a hero. Helen asks her men to arrest the men, and the way this happens is done irregularly, and Lockley records it. Ishbel appears, and she tells him that she is willing to talk to him as long as he does not use the footage from the arrest.
Ishbel tells him that she will contact him today to tell him where they are to meet. Then Ishbel talks to Helen, saying that she wants to talk to Moira. When they reach Moira's house, Moira is surprised and starts crying. When Ishbel says that if she knew what her son planned, she simply nods. Then Ishbel orders Moira and Helen to wait upstairs.
Helen and Moira talk, and Moira says that she wants to tell her something she has not said. She says that the night before the shooting, she and Ryan had dinner together after many months with him dining in his room alone. They talked, and Moira knew that he and Abigail had been together at school, and he had a crush on her. That night Ryan told her that Abigail knew he existed, but she hated him. Moira advised her to put Abigail at the back of his mind, and Ryan then said that he was going to put Abigail in the past. He was going to put all the women in the past. At the time Moira didnt think anything of it, but after the shooting happened, she realised that he was telling her what he was going to do, and she seemed to have given him permission. Helen tells her that she mustn't blame herself because she couldn't have known that he would resort to something so terrible.
Downstairs Ishbel has called Grant to come and see her. She has said that she and Moira have met several times, and that seems to be the bait for him. When Lockley turns up, he sets his phone to record the conversation, and Ishbel says that if he doesn't mind, she won't. Then Ishbel tries to make him admit that he knew things about her and Aidan because he broke into their email accounts. Lockley first denies it, but when she says that she won't say a single thing until he tells her the truth, so Lockley admits that he hacked into her email account. Then Helen appears and says he is arrested for illegally accessing private information. Ishbel has recorded the whole conversation with Lockley admitting his crimes.
Ishbel and Moira finally talk about their children, and how Moira is also a victim.
