The book starts very strongly as the narrator and main character, Ellen, tells us that since she was a young child, she thought of ways to kill her father.
Ellen is a child, and she tells us about her family. Her father was a drunkard, cruel and lazy, and her mother was always sick. Both of them are now dead, and Ellen has a new family, where she is spoilt and has everything she lacked while she lived with her real father and mother. Her mother died. And she mentions that social services took her from her father, and he died in a brawl.
