Regular characters
- Dr Watson is the narrator in the Sherlock Holmes adventures. Dr Watson was in the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers, and he was wounded during the Second Afghan War. In London he needed to find lodgings, and through an acquaintance he met Sherlock Holmes, and they share lodgings. In this book he now lives with his wife.
- Sherlock Holmes is a consultant detective. He has a wide knowledge of many subjects, which is required by his profession. He is intelligent, morose, and he loves playing the violin and is agood at singlestick.
- Mrs Hudson is Holmes's housekeeper.
Characters in this novel:
- Peterson is the commissionaire who finds the goose and the hat, so he asks Holmes for help to find the owner. Since the goose won't remain fresh, Holmes tells him to cook it and it is then that his wife finds the carbunckle.
- Henry Baker is the owner of the hat and goose. When he answers Holmes's advertisement, it is obvious that he has no idea there was a gemstone in the goose.
- Countess of Morcar is the woman who owns the stolen gemstone. It was stolen while she was staying at the Cosmopolitan Hotel.
- John HOrner is the plumber who is accused of stealing the jewel.
- James Ryder is the head attendant of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and he accused Horner of stealing the carbuncle. He turns out to be the thief and hid the jewel by making a goose swallow it. This was the goose that his sister had promised him, but then she made a mistake and gave the goose away. When Holmes discovers the truth, Ryder confesses, and Holmes decides not to report him.
- Catherine Cusack is the maid to the countess.
- Inspector Bradstreet is the detective investigating the theft of the jewel.
- Windigate is the owner of the Alpha Inn where Baker gets the goose.
- Breckinridge is the supplier of geese in Covent Garden.
- Maggie Oakshott is Ryder's sister and grows geese that she supplies to Breckinridge.
