SPOILERS!!!
Runcorn discovers that the suspects are Newbridge and Barclay. Sir Alan told him that what Naomi Costain hid was that she had been unfaithful to the vicar, got pregnant, and had a child that she killed. That meant that Mrs Costain could have killed Olivia if the latter knew about the secret. Runcorn is not convinced, and he talks to the doctor. Olivia was in love with someone, Percival, but the young man was penniless and left for Africa. It was Olivia who got pregnant, and Naomi was with her when she had the baby, a stillborn son.
One of her suitors discovered the truth, and when he was turned down, he was incensed. Runcorn discovers that the man who killed Olivia was Newbridge, which is a relief for him because he would have hated to hurt Melisande. The murderer is arrested, and the credit goes to Sir Alan.
Runcorn is about to leave when Melisande approaches her, saying that she knows he was the one who discovered everything. Then she tells him if he is ever going to tell her that he loves her. Runcorn says that he does love her and won't be able to marry anyone else, and Melisande tells him that she will be his wife.
Lovely ending for a good mystery.
