SPOILERS!!!

Dr Read receives the visit of a man who looks pale and haggard. The man tells him that he is about to die even though he is not sick. He talks about a dark presence, and he offers the doctor a thousand pounds to stay with him until his death. Dr Read is sceptical, but he eventually decides to go with the man. In his bedroom the man goes to bed while Dr Read keeps watch, and at some point he falls asleep. Yet, something wakes him up, and he notices a shape in the bedroom, and a hand that is missing a finger approaches the man in bed. Dr Read is afraid and can't do much, and the man dies.

The man's lawyer calls him to initiate the proceedings for him to receive the money, but the man's widow wants to contest the will. Dr Read agrees to meet the widow, and he is mesmerised by her beauty, and when she greets him by shaking his hand, he notices that there is a finger missing. The woman notices, and after that, the woman decides not to do anything about the will and Dr Read gets his money. This means that there was no ghost and the woman killed her husband.
