It is 16 December 1940, and Carol Sinclair is invited to a soiree where some leading figures have a meeting.
The host is Lord Peter Hardy. Carol is a beautiful woman, and her husband Charles has left to fight in the war. Carol runs into her brother-in-love, Viscount Jason Sinclair, and his wife Cressida at the soiree. Cressida is someone who Carol doesn't get along with because the woman uses every opportunity to drop hateful comments. At the party there is also a gossip columnist, Freddi Hughes Norton, and Kim Philby from the secret service.
Sir Peter shows his guests a diamond necklace he bought for his wife recently. Then the lights go out suddently, and when power is restored, the necklace is nowhere to be found. Sir Peter is very nervous and tells his guests that it is not funny. Carol is the one that discovers that in the safe there is a false bottom, and that is where the necklace was. This impresses Kim Philby very much, who tells her that they could do with more women like her at the scret service.
