These are the novella's characters for future reference:
- Caroline Fielding (previously Ellison) is Charlotte’s mother. Caroline knows that Charlotte’s frankness and determination was something she couldn't fight against, so she was happy for her to marry a policeman. Caroline lost her first husband after he died from a short disease. Now she is married again; her husband is Joshua, an actor, seventeen years younger than her. The marriage has caused her to lose some of her friends and conflicts with her mother-in-law.
- Joshua Fielding is Caroline's husband. He is an actor and directs his own company.
- Vincent Singer is a leading actor in Joshua's company. He is the killer in the story when he discovered that the unexpected guest was the person who wanted to take revenge on him. When Caroline discovers he is the murderer, he accientally falls on a big window and falls to his death.
- James Hobbs is another actor of Joshua's company.
- Mery Carstairs is an actress in Joshua's company. She is married to James.
- Lydia Rye is another actress.
- Charles Netheridge is a rich man who hires Joshua and his company to erform the play that his daughter has written based on Bram stoker's novel "Dracula.
- Alice Netheridge is Charles's daughter and she longs to become a playwright. She is supposed to marry and have a family, but that is not what she longs for.
- Eliza Netheridge is Charles's wife. She feels like a stranger in her own house since her husband refuses to change the dark, gloomy decoration that his mother chose for the house.
- Douglas Paterson is Alice's fiancé. He disapproves of Alice's interest in theatrical ventures, and his interest for Lydia Rye is sparked during these days.
- Anton Ballin/Anton Rausch is the man who turns up at the house, claiming that his carriage has broken down, so he is asked to stay. Anton came to the house with a purpose: to take revenge on Vincent. When Vincent recognised him, he decided to kill him.
- Tess is a maid in the house.
