RATING: GOOD
SPOILERS!!!
Lois Cayley is twenty-one and out of school, and her stepfather has just died, having decimated her mother's fortune. As she has no money or relatives, she tells her friend Elsie that she is about to start an adventure but doesn't know what. As she walks the streets of London, she overhears two women, one of whom sounds grumpy and complaints about having to travel to Germany but having been abandoned by her maid. Lois addresses the woman, offering her to replace her maid for just the ticket. The woman feels that addressing someone without a proper introduction is rude, but when Lois tells her who her father was, she remembers him and accepts Lois's offer.
The woman's name is Georgina Fawley, and Lois has to use her patience as Georgina complaints too much. Georgina keeps her jewellery box in her hands and does not let anyone close by. A man named Comte de Laroche-sur-Loiret is in their compartment, and from the first moment Lois is suspicious, but Georgina seems to have fallen for the man's easy praise. The man tries to get the jewellery box at some point when Lois has it, but she doesn't fall for it
Then when they get to Germany, the man hurries them, saying that she has heard they need to change trains. Georgina is so flustered that she finally allows to let the man help her with the jewellery box. Then he says that it has been a mistake and as they are about to return to the original train car, the man flees with the box. Georgina is horrified, but Lois surprises her by saying that as she suspected the man, she changed the jewels to the food box, and her jewels are secure. Georgina is positively impressed.
I enjoyed this short story, and I found Lois Cayley a great and intereresting character.
