Sherlock sends Holmes to bring a dog, a good hound, that belongs to some acquaintace of his. The two men set off after the dog, and the scent takes them to a wharf where boats are hired. The woman, Mrs Smith, comes out and says that her husband hired his launch to some men, one of whom has a wooden leg. The woman is worried about him, and Holmes manages to get a description of the boat. Then he calls the Baker Street irregulars, the band of children who often help him, and he tells them to find the location where the boat is.
Holmes intends to find the killer because Thadeus Sholto has been arrested alongside the housekeeper and other servants.
