The book starts, telling us about a beech tree that fell and the men who removed it brought the narrator someone that was inside. What was found was lots of empty seed envelopes.
The novel is told from different points of view. First, we have Ann, who is the person who got the seed bags. She tells us that her father, Sylvester, came from Madeira and when she was around 5, he left and she has never heard from him again. Her mother, Phoebe, is a painter, and she has never had an easy relationship with her. Phoebe was a great portraitist, but when she got cancer, she stopped painting because of the effects of chemotherapy. Ann gets a call from Phoebe's agent, Dagmar, and she tells her that she is worried. Her mother, who has always been so sociable, is lonely and she seems to eat only pizza. Ann says that she will call her because she has some news to give her. She and Jack, her husband, are getting divorced as he is marrying someone else who is pregnant.
Ann calls her mother, saying that she wants to see her as there is something she needs to tell her, but Phoebe is hostile and hangs up on her.
