New Book - Highgate Rise - Thomas and Charlotte Pitt 11 - by Anne Perry (Pages 1 - 32)

First Published: January 1, 1991

It is September 1888. Thomas Pitt is called to investigate a case of arson. As the police  at the station are busy with finding out the murderer of Whitechapel, he has to see to this case.

The house of Dr Shaw has burnt and his wife was found dead. She is the only casualty as the doctor was out, assisting at a birth, and the servants managed to escape. The fire brigade discovered that the fire started in four different points simultaneously. So Mrs Shaw's death is murder.

Pitt and a local constable, James Murdo, question the neighbours, but nobody knows anything. The only one who seems to have seen something is a twelve-year-old tweenie called Alice who claims to have seen a ghost pass the house. And Miss Flora Lutterworth who was at a conference, remembers seeing Dr Shaw in his carriage driving away and some other neighbours.
