Myddleton Mote, the house which is where the action takes place, is in Kent. Kent is a county in southeastern England. It is bordered by Essex across the Thames Estuary to the north, the Strait of Dover to the south-east, East Sussex to the south-west, Surrey to the west, and Greater London to the north-west.

Miranda inherits a valuable portrait by the artist Artemisia Gentileshi, who wa sabused by her tutor Agostino Tossi, and she took revenge by painting herself and her abuser in Judith Slaying Holofernes. Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi (8 July 1593 – after January 1654)[3] was an Italian Baroque painter. Gentileschi is considered among the most accomplished 17th-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. 

Esme has a series of portraits, based on Shakespeare's female characters. One is Hermione. Hermione is the virtuous and falsely accused Queen of Sicilia in William Shakespeare's late romance play, The Winter's Tale.  King Leontes falls into an irrational fit of jealousy, falsely accusing her of having an affair with his childhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia. Hermione faces public humiliation and a trial, where she maintains her calm dignity and defends herself eloquently against the false charges.

Another character was Thaisa. Thaisa is a main fictional character and the wife of the title prince in Shakespeare's late romance play Pericles, Prince of Tyre.  She falls in love with Pericles after he wins a jousting tournament and chooses him over many noble suitors. Thaisa, the wife of the title character in Pericles, Prince of Tyre, is buried at sea, believed dead. during a violent storm while giving birth to Marina.

Her last and most crude portrait is of Lavinia. Lavinia is the only daughter of the Roman general Titus in William Shakespeare's tragedy Titus Andronicus. She is initially promised to Bassianus, though the newly declared Emperor Saturninus briefly tries to claim her instead. Bassianus takes her with the help of her brothers, angering her father. As part of a brutal revenge plot orchestrated by Empress Tamora, Tamora's sons (Demetrius and Chiron) rape Lavinia, cut off her hands, and cut out her tongue to prevent her from identifying them.
