RATING: OKAY
SPOILERS!!!
The narration combines the events happening in 1993 when the Ross family are on holiday and Kirsty attracts Mark, who her brother doesn't like it, and the events in present as Alice takes in the man with no memory and Lilly reporting her husband missing.
The logical explanation is that Lily's husband is the man that Alice has taken in. Frank feels afraid of going to the police. The only thing that Frank seems to remember is that he saw someone drowning and a teenage girl. Alice's friend checks the news from when Frank was a teenager, and all she finds is that a man, Tony Ross, died of a heart attack, trying to save two teenagers from drowning.
Lily is struggling to find out more about the husband that is an enigma to her, and Carl's friend, Russ, helps her, but Russ doesn't know much about Carl's personal life. In a wardrobe Lily finds some rings, and then she gets a statement from Carl's phone, trying to trace his mother's number when she talked to the woman a few weeks ago. There is only one number that day, and Lily tries to call from her home phone, but nobody answers. When she calls from her mobile phone, a woman answers, but she denies having talked to her or having a son called Carl. When she talks to Russ, he helps her trace the number which comes from Ridingshouse.
Lily convinces Russ to drive her there, and they sneak into the house but it is deserted. It is when they go to the pub that they come across Alice and Frank, and when she shows the photo to the landlord and says that her husband has been missing for three days that Alice comes to her. After that, we discover that Carl is Mark, and in 1993 Mark did something terrible. As Kirsty turned him down, he was very angry, and when Gray agreed to go to a party at the big house because she liked one of Mark's friends, Kirsty tagged along. In the house Mark convinced them to take ecstasy tablets, and then Mark locked them in a room, threatening to hurt them. The thing ended up with Gray and Kirsty fleeing from him, and eventually they fell to the sea. Greey managed to get to the rocks, and then his father died of a heart attack. Mark and Kirsty were nowhere to be found, and Gray has always believed that his sister and Mark drowned.
Then in London Gray saw Mark, and he followed him, very upset. Gray confronted him and hit him and tied him to the radiator in some empty flats near Mark's home. Gray wanted to kill him, but it is then that he suffered the amnesia attack, and Gray left and Mark fled, thinking that his cover was at risk.
Lily, Alice and Gray/Frank locate Mark/Carl's aunt, and she confesses that in 1993 Carl phoned her after he managed to come out of the sea. The woman says that Kirsty was there as well, and she was alive, but Mark banned her from taking her to hospital, and she died. Kitty says that Carl buried her in the garden that Kitty has, and Kitty planted a bush.
Carl/Mark is found in Scotland and the police arrest them. Gray and his mother finally manage to bury Kirsty properly, and Alice goes to the funeral. Gray has been treated for his amnesia and mental problems and has been committed to a hospital for a few months, and now he is still struggling, but he wants to try a relationship with Alice. And Lily has decidded to stay even though her marriage to Carl is not legal, and Russ and his wife have hired her as an au-pair.
I liked some parts of fthe book, but some others failed to grab my interest and I found them a bit far-fetched.
