RATING: GOOD
SPOILERS!!!
Eustace takes Virginia and the children to the beach and they spend a wonderful time. He even returns to the cottage to put the children to bed. When he goes and Virginia is left alone, she starts remembering her life with her late husband, Anthony. It wasn't a happy marriage because from the beginning Anthony confessed that he needed to marry to be able to receive his uncle's inheritance, the house in Scotland. He claimed that Virginia was pretty and was there to marry him. Then she also discovered that he was having an affair with a neighbour, Liz. It was after being with this woman who he was driving home when he had the accident that killed him. Virginia regrets not having known love in the way she had dreamt of having with Eustace.
The next day Alice arrives at the cottage, and when Virginia mentions Eustace, Alice is surprised to know that Virginia has seen him more than she was aware of. Then she tells her that she remembers a letter that she saw twenty years ago from him, but Virginia never got, and they imagine that Virginia's mother didn't give her. Alice stays with the children and Virginia rushes to see Eustace. There she declares her love, and he says that he rang her several times twenty years ago but her mother always got the call and said that Virginia was out, and he tried to write to her, but when she didn't reply, he thought it was a lost cause. Virginia tells him that her mother never told her about the calls and never gave her the letter. As they are together, the children appear, and Virginia hints that they may remain in Cornwall.
This was a lovely story. I really loved it.
