The novel is set in Newbay, a fictional town in Devon. Devon is a county in South West England.
Most of the characters are the amateur actors to perform in the pantomime "Cinderella". In this version of the tale there is a character, Buttons, who is played by Ben. Buttons is a traditional character in Cinderella pantomimes He is typically a male servant of the household who helps Cinderella and loves her, and who is liked and trusted but not loved by her.
Jon persuades Lauren, a local celebrity, to do Prince Charming by saying that she reminds her of Tilda Swinton. Katherine Matilda Swinton (born 5 November 1960) is a British actress. Known for her roles in independent films and blockbusters, she has received various accolades, including an Academy Award and a British Academy Film Award, in addition to nominations for three Golden Globe Awards.
Thea tells Kirsty that her favourite book is House At Pooh Corner. The House at Pooh Corner is a 1928 children's book by A. A. Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepard. This book is the second novel, and final one by Milne, to feature Winnie-the-Pooh and his world.
Kirsty tells her that hers is the Moomins. The Moomins are the central characters in a series of novels, short stories, picture books, and a comic strip by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson. They are a family of white, round fairy-tale characters with large snouts that make them resemble the hippopotamus. However, despite this resemblance, the Moomin family are trolls.
Jon decides to include the song "Your Feet's Too Big" in the pantomime as reference to Kirsty's feet. "Your Feet's Too Big" is a song composed in 1936 by Fred Fisher with lyrics by Ada Benson.
