This novel is set in 1829.
Two men, Natan Ketilsson and Patur Jonsson, were killed savagely, and the murderers were a man and two housemaids, Krikrik Sigrudsson, Sigrid and Agnes. The commissioner writes a letter to Assistant Reverend Thorvandu (Toti) to ask for his services with Agnes, one of the murderers, who will be executed soon. The commissioner Blondal tells Toti that Agnes will be moved to a nearby town, so he will be aThe ble to visit her frequently. Toti accepts. Blondal also goes to see Jon, one of his chiefs, to tell him that he needs to make arrangements to house Agnes and supervise her. Jon is not there, but his daughters are. The girls fear that her parents won't be pleased by the arrangements, and they are right. Margret, their mother, is not happy at all, but they can't refuse.
Agnes arrives, and Margret is shocked to see the state of her. Someone has beaten her to a pulp, and her body and clothes are filthy. Margret helps her undress and clean her. There are parts about Agnes's inner monologue, and we know that she requested to have Reverend Toti because she knows him, but Toti doesn't recognise her. I am really curious about Agnes, the reason why she helped kill those men, and how she knows Toti.
