This is a short story about romance. Lucas goes to the cinema with his sister to watch Gatsby, and on the way out a woman almost falls and he saves her from falling. From that moment Lucas feels attracted to her. The woman whose name is Martha does not lead a very happy existence. She is married to Sam, a billionaire, who beats her and controls her. They have two children, and we understand that the reason why she does not leave him is the children.
Lucas and Martha meet again at a photograph exhibition in the gallery where Lucas works. They talk when Sam is busy hobnobbing with others in the exhibition. Lucas says he wants to see her again, and Martha agrees, and thanks to her friend's help, she and Lucas meet regularly and become lovers. Lucas is conflicted because he doesn't want to risk Martha's welfare but he wants more. At the end of the book Martha leaves Sam and writes a note to him, telling him that she is leaving and taking the children.
Throughout the book there is a parallel between Martha and Lucas, and Gatsby and Daisy.
This was a quick uncomplicated read.
