Davey is a psychiatrist who practises in two hospitals as well as having his own private practice.
What we know about Davey is that when he was a child, his brother Johnny was killed by an articulated lorry when he and Davey were on their way to school. Johnny was only six, and Davey saw everything. After that, his mother had twin daughters, and Davey has grown up with the conviction that her mother would have preferred Davey had been the dead son. Davey is now married to Olivia.
Davey specialises in death, specifically suicides. The book starts with his impressions of his patient, Elizabeth Cruikshank, who he defines as a different kind of woman. Elizabeth tried to commit suicide, but it was just luck that her neighbour came to find the key he had left her for emergencies.
I loved the other book of this author I read a while ago, and I think I am going to enjoy this one as well. The style is quite outstanding in its difference, and I am curious to learn what the novel is taking me.
