The novel is an account of Davey of the time when he was a doctor to Elizabeth Cruikshank, who he finds mysterious. What he has learnt from her is that she was a librarian, married an engineer, Neil, and has two children, who don't visit her. Elizabeth speaks little and keeps herself to herself.
In the book Davey tells us about other patients. Lenny is the office cleaner, but he used to be his patient. Lenny is a schizophrenic, but now he has his problems under control, and when the hospital had problems finding cleaners, Lenny got the job. Another patient is Hassid, a Pakistan student of quantum physics, who started having mental problems after he found himself detached from his own culture.
Davey has blind faith in Gus, who gives him good advice in his field. Another colleague is Dan, who is also a friend. Dan is married to Barbara, who used to go out with Davey before he started with Olivia. I have the suspicion that maybe Dan and Olivia may betray Davey because Davey has noticed that they are getting on better now.
The book has good reflections on the topic of mental health, life and death, and the concept of identity. It is not an easy book to read, but I think it is very interesting.
