The Other Daughter 4 (Pages 155 - 258)

 SPOILERS!!!

Fearing for Melanie's life, David takes her to a hotel. She is very upset and angry because she has been lied to, and David tries to explain but he doesn't tell him the truth about the reason why he was investigating in her house. He tells her that William is a gambler and is being investigated for some seedy dealings. The reason is that he and Harper are operating on healthy people and inserting pacemakers when they are not needed for financial gain.

David talks to another agent, Quincy, who has been having a look at Maegan's file because his team are trying to come up with characteristics for certain types of criminal. There are some things that do not tally with Lee's profile. It seems that he may not have killed Meagan. Melanie is shocked to discover that her family may have killed Meagan, and they reached an agreement with Lee, so if he confessed to killing Meagan, the Stokes will look after his daughter, that is, Melanie.

The evidence shows that the Stokes took up life insurance of their children for one million dollars, and at the time they were going through financial difficulties. So the money they got from Meagan's death saved them. The way Meagan's body was left is very different to the other victims. She was wrapped in a blanket in a way it shows delicacy and care, and the reason why she was decapitated and her hands cut off could imply a feeling of guilt or just a way to conceal evidence.

Melanie is shocked and emotional, and she and David become closer and closer, giving each other other confort, but David knows that there are certain limits they can't cross. The next day he goes to talk to his boss, who is not happy that he is investigating a years-old solved crime, but David persuades him to give him some time.

The man who shot Melanie is found dead. He has been shot twice in the chest and dumped into the water. Melanie identifies it, and then she wants to go home even though she is aware that whoever hired this man to kill her may hire someone else to finish the job. Yet, she is adamant to return home. I wonder what will happen now.
