These are the regular characters in the book  or characters that are relevant in the history of the main characters for further reference:

Characters in this book:
- Sergeant Detective DD Warren (46) is the detective who gives the series its name. She is therefore the main character. DD is tough and resilient. After a long period without a partner, DD d met Alex Wilson, married and had a baby boy, Jack. In a previous book she was injured but now she is back on the saddle. Now DD shows more her tender heart as she is now a mother and feels more vulnerable. 
- Detective Alex Wilson is a professor in the police academy who is  married to DDand they  have a son. Alex is very sweet to DD and they make a great couple.
- Jack Wilson (5) is DD and Alex’s son. In this book he gets a dog despite DD's feelings. ç
- Kiko is Jack's new dog.
- Florence Dane (Flora) was the main character in the previous and she is a main character in this book too. . When she was nineteen, she was kidnapped and was held captive for 472 days. She developed a bonding with her kidnapper, and she missed opportunities to be rescued. It was the police who saved her, and she killed Jacob, her kidnapper. After being rescued, Flora was never the same, and she felt that she destroyed her family. Flora then started to train physically and acted as bait for men who were likely kidnappers. In this book Flora has an online support group for survivors, and one of them is Sarah, a girl who survived the attack of a murderer, who killed all her other flat mates. Sarah gets into contact with Roxy Baez, and when the latter disappears, Flora gets involved and helps DD to find her. 
- Detective Phil Leblanc is one of the detectives in DD’s team. He is the father of four children.
- Neil (35) is another detective in DD’s team. He is gay and once he dated the medical examiner, Ben, for a while. He is red-headed and looks much younger than he is.
- Detective Carol Manley (34) is the new detective that came to replace DD, and as a consequence, DD feels jealous of her.
- Ben Whitley is the police medical examiner who dated Neil for a bit.
- Deputy Superintendent Carl Hogan is one of DD’s superior.
- Jacob Ness was Flora's kidnapper.
- Bob and Edith Wilson are Alex’s parents. They have moved to Boston to be near their son and grandson.
- Betsy Leblanc is Phil’s wife.
- Bobby Dodge was central in some of the novels. He used to work as a sniper for the Massachusetts State Police, but he left the force to become a detective in the Massachusetts State Police. Bobby has a complicated family history. His father was a drunkard, and his mother left when he was six. Since that day he has never heard from her, and he has grown up feeling upset and angry. After his mother left, there was an incident in which his father stabbed Bobby’s brother, George, and that made him stop drinking. His brother also left, and he hasn’t heard from him either. Now Bobby is married to Annabelle, who he met when he was investigating her case, and they have a baby girl, Carina.
- Annabelle Granger Dodge is Bobby’s wife and they now have a baby girl. In a previous book she was a key character in the case Bobby and DD investigated. From the age of seven, her father kept moving them to different cities and changing the names of the whole family. Actually, Annabelle’s real name is Amy. Annabelle never knew why they kept moving, and then six bodies were found in an underground chamber, one of which belonged to her childhood friend, Dori. In the end Annabelle discovered that what her father was afraid of was that his mentally-unbalanced brother would hurt Annabelle. Tommy eventually located Annabelle, and at the end of the book he almost killed her.
- Carina Dodge is Bobby and Annabelle’s daughter.
- Patsy Warren is DD’s mother. DD has always had a difficult relationship with her mother because she feels that she was not a wanted child. Patsy and her husband live in Florida.
- Roy Warren is DD’s father.
- Rosa Dane is Flora's mother. She did everything that the police told him to help find her daughter. 
- Darwin Dane is Flora's brother. He decided to leave and start life in London after Flora was rescued. 
- Dr Samuel Keynes is the FBI victim specialist who helped Flora after she was rescued. Now Samuel and Flora's mother are in a relationship. 
- Stacey Summers (20)  was the girl who Flora tried to help when she was abducted. 


These are the characters in this book:Florence 

- Sarah is a girl who one night witnessed the murder of all her flatmates, and she was the only who survived. Sarah got into contact with Flora and started helping her in her intent to help survivors. Sarah is the one Roxy contacts. At the end of the book Sarah decides to start studying again.
- Rosana Baez (16) is the girl whose family is murdered. Roxy flees when she learns about the death of her family, and Flora and DD eventually find her. When Roxy discovers that her friend Mike killed her family to protect her, she sprayed him with a bear can and killed him. Roxy now lives with her brother's father, Hector.
- Lola Baez (13) was Roxy's sister. She was murdered. Roxy was very protective of her sister, but she could not stop her from being abused. Lola reacted very differently to Roxy when their life took them back to Roberto and Anya, so she decided to join a gang of violent girls. 
- Mike Davis is the killer. Roxy met him when they were at the foster home, and Mike tried to protect and help her from Roberto and Anya. Thinking that her family, Lola and Hector were not good for Roxy, he decided to kill them, but he only hurt Hector. Mike dies when Roxy sprayed him with gas, and he intentionally opens his mouth to inhale the gas. 
- Hector Albalos is Manny's father. He is devastated when he hears about his son's death. Hector is a barman, and he admits that things were from bad to worse when he and Juanita were together as they both drank. After a very violent argument, he decided to leave, and soon afterwards the children were removed from their home. Hector couldn't take the children in because he was not sober in that time. Then he decided to stop drinking. Hector is also shot by the murderer, but it is only a scratchc. At the end of the book Roxy goes to live with him. 
- Tricia Lobdell Cass is the guidance counsellor at Roxy's school. She admits to being coerced by Roberto. 
- Juanita Baez (38) is Roxy, Lola and Manny's mother, who was murdered as well as her partner and two of her children. Juanita was a nurse, but she was an alcoholic, and for that reason she lost custody of her children. However, she fought hard to get them back by stopping drinking, going to AA and having a job. When she managed to get her children back, she was happy, and then she met Charlie and they started to live together. Life was good, but she was worried about Lola and Roxy, especially as she started to suspect that they had been abused, so she even talked to a lawyer to sue the government. 
- Manny (7) was Juanita's young son. He was a sweet boy who her sister loved. When the children were removed from their mother, Manny was sent to a different foster family, and unlike her sisters, he was well looked after. 
- Charlie Boyd (45) is Juanita's partner, who was also killed. He was a constructor 
- Mother Del is the foster mother that Roxy and Lola were sent to. She was a woman who did not care about her charges, and abuse and illtreatment happened under her very nose. 
-Roberto Faillon abused Roxy and Lola in the foster home. Mike also killed him, but the police thought it was suicide.
- Anya Seton was Roberto's girlfriend and acccessory in his abuse. 
- Doug is the theatre director. Anya had a relationship with him and had dreams that he would take her to New York where she would be a star. 
- Mrs Chula is the teacher that Roxy wrote her narrative for. 
- Heidi, Christy and Kelly were Sarah's flatmates who were murdered.
- Carmen Rodríguez is the leader of the diablas, the gang Lola hung out with.
