Anatomy of a Scandal 3 - The End (Pages 105 - end)

 RATING: GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

We discover that Holly is Kate. When she was at Oxford in 1992, one night when she was returning to her lodgings after being at a party, she came across James. Holly was smitten but what she never expected is that he would rape her. That marked the rest of her life. After that moment, she locked herself in her room, and it was her friend Ali who found her, and she told her what had happened to her but not who did it. Holly ended up leaving Oxford, and she started studying law in the north, and she started using her middle name, and when she married, she used her husband's name even after their divorce. Kate thinks that what James did to her made her cautious and wary around men, and in her career she has become obsessed with abuse cases.

After reading about the trial, Ali goes to talk to Kate because she realises that she has accepted a case which creates a conflict of interests. Kate admits to everything, even her desire to go after James, and she wants to do everything to have him found guilty. Ali does not agree, but she will not betray her friend.

James testifies, claiming that what happened in the lift with Olivia was of mutual consent, but things became too passionate. It is his word against Olivia's, and the jury brings back a verdict of not guilty, so he is acquitted.

At home Sophie starts having doubts. She feels humiliated by all the details of the relationship of her husband and his mistress. In the bedroom Sophie questions her husband, and he unwillingly admits that he told his truth at the trial or the truth as he sees it. And Sophie realises that James is a liar and has committed perjury.

After that, things are not good for Sophie, and she feels she is living a lie. She even starts seeing a psychologist, and when she receives an invitation for a reunion of her Oxford college, the therapist pushes her to go. In Oxford Sophie talks to one of her former fellow students, and at some point he tells her that he is divorced and if she needs a good divorce lawyer, he can offer her his card. Sophie says that she is not there, but she takes the card anyway.

When Sophie is outside in the college, she sees a woman who watches her. It is Ali, who approaches her. She is drunk, and she tells Sophie if she remembers Holly, and Sophie says that she does but she left the first year, but she does not know why. Then Ali tells her that Holly left because Jame raped her. Sophie flees from the place, but she realises that she believes Ali.

Some months later Sophie is with James at some meeting, and it is then that she starts wondering whether it is worth working on their marriage. She starts thinking that not even the children are a good reason to stick to James. Then she sees James showing all his charm to a woman, and she realises that she will divorce James.

We also discover that the reason why James and the Prime Minister, Tom, are so close is because they were part of a wild club that trashed restaurants. One night when they were idling in one of the rooms, Tom brought heroine, and he and another of the members had some. James knew that was bad news, and he dragged Tom away from the place, and when they were outside, they saw the other man jump to his death. Yet, they did not stop, thinking that some other people would call the ambulance. Tom has always felt beholden to James. Yet, shortly after his divorce the story appears in the newspaper, so Tom has to step down from his position of power, and James never recovers his career.

As for Kate, the trial has done her good and she starts focusing on other causes rather than in abuse.
