The Astors 2 (Pages 55 - 62)

John Jacob Astor eventually sold the American Fur Company.  In 1834, John Jacob Astor sold his interest on the river to replace the old fur company. He invested his fortune in real estate on Manhattan Island, New York, and became the wealthiest man in America. After 1840, the business of the American Fur Company declined.

Then John Jacob built Astor House, a luxurious hotel. The Astor House was a luxury hotel in New York City. It opened in 1836 and soon became the best-known hotel in America. Part of it was demolished in 1913; the rest was demolished in 1926.
