RATING: GOOD BUT A FLAT ENDING
SPOILERS!!!
I enjoyed the book and intrigue, but I was disappointed that there was nothing criminal in Katrin's fall.
DS Samson and her boss Trelawney investigate the case, but they realise that there are many inaccuracies in the accounts of the witnesses. The evidence points at Amelie as DS Samson has found Katrin's phone in her drawer as well as some cocaine wrappers. Amelie did a runner when she heard that social services were about to visit her. Bill is also gone when he was supposed to be in the hospital.
When Katrin wakes up, she is relieved to discover that her baby is okay. She says she is confused. Then when she and Ginny are left alone, Katrin says that she remembers everything. We discover that Katrin was very worried about Frida when Poppy, the girl who is in the same school, told her that there were rumours that Frida was in a relationship with a teacher, and some people have heard her throw up, evidence that she may be pregnant. Katrin tried to talk to Frida, but the girl refused to meet her, and they had an argument. The girl ended up saying that she should worry about her husband and Amelie who were cannodling in her own house. From where Katrin stood, she could see Bill and Amelie's profile at the window, admiring baby Henri. Katrin was very upset, and when she ran into Ginny, she said that she wanted Bill and Amelie to pay for the damage they were doing. Then they saw a light that Bill had forgotten to turn on in the clock tower. So they were there, and when they were climbing down the stairs, old Thomas appeared, and that surprised both Ginny and Katrin. When Katrin took a step forwards, she tripped and fell down the stairs. Thomas phoned the ambulance, and Ginny panicked and pretended that she hadn't been there.
When Karin asks her why, she explains that there is so much she is ashamed of. Ginny then tells her that she lied and she was not one of the mothers who had a baby in the home. She was actually one of the nurses, one of the jailers, and her father was the owner. It turns out that many women were discovering that her father was their father, and Katrin discovers that Ginny is actually her half sister. And Ginny also says that she has realised that Thomas looks like her father, and that means that he abused Thomas's mother, who was a housemaid.
Frida returns to the boarding school, and as nobody can take her, it is DS Samson that drives her. She has another reason. She wants to catch the teacher who has abused her and is trying to get her to use a abortive drug. So after bidding Frida goodbye, Samson hides behind glasses and a cap, and she sees the teacher, Barnaby, follow Frida to her room, and in that moment Samson bursts into the room where the man is offering her the drug, and Barnaby is arrested.
Frida goes home to Katrin, Hugo and Ginny. Katrin is determined to divorce Bill, who has been found in a hotel, trying to escape as he was afraid to be accused of attemting against his wife's life, and Amelie has also been found but she has no concern about her children. Katrin and Hugo wonder what to do about Frida and the pregnancy, but then Frida announces that she has had a miscarriage.
After the incident, everything goes back to normal. Amelie and Bill are gone, but Katrin and Hugo do not miss them. Hugo is just sad that Henri is not actually his son, but he loves him as much as if he were his own. He has him and Frida, and also Katrin and his nephews. Ginny is also very happy to have her new family.
I like the book but I was a bit disappointed at the end.
