In Her Tracks 4 - The End (Pages 304 - end)

 RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

I was surprised by the twist the author throws at us at the end. When Tracy talks to Lindsay, who now goes by Jessica, she learns that Lindsay went through a nighmare with the Spragues, especially Ed Sprague, the father. Lindsay says that Evan was the only one who was good, and they used to play together while she was shackled in the basement. Everybody thought that Evan was stupid, but Lindsay says that he was just slow, but not stupid. Then she planned her escape, and she had to deceive Evan. She told him that there was a wonderful game, and she persuaded to leave her some money hidden so that she could buy the game. Evan believed her, and then he took off her shackles, so she ran away.

When Tracy asks her why she did everything to erase her existence, she says that she did it for her daughter. Tracy then realises that Lindsay was pregnant when she ran away. She says that her daughter was not created out of love, but she was raised with all the love she could give her without knowing about her origins. And it is then that Lindsay drops the bomb when she says that she thinks her daughter is Ed's because Bigby always wore protection. So the neighbour who seemed so cooperative is also a monster.

Tracy calls Kinns, who finally got the warrant to search the house, and she gives her instructions where to search after talking to Lindsay. Then she tells him about Bigby, but Kinns discovers that he is gone. Tracy is on her way to the cabin that the Spragues have after discovering the truth from Lindsay, and when Kinns says that Franklin and Evan are not in the house.

Franklin and Evan arrive at the cabin, and they discover that the pump is not working. Franklin takes Evan to the girls, and he goes to repair the pump. Stephanie is scared, but she discovers that what Evan just wants is to play board games as he did with Lindsay. While Franklin is outside, Bigby appears, and then he tells him everything. It was Bigby who planned to rape and kill Stephanie, but things went wrong when Evan appeared and he couldn't risk he would remember. So that is the reason Stephanie ended up in the Spragues' house, and when the police started the investigation, Bigby called to direct suspicion towards the Spragues. Now Bigby tells him that he has to take care of things to save himself. Then he shoots and kills Franklin. Tracy and the local police are near, and when they reach the barn, Bigby runs out of it, and Tracy goes after him. When the man finds himself cornered, he shoots himself. Tracy and the other policemen help the girls, and Evan is arrested.

The end to this subplot is lovely. Carroll is in prison, and Evan has been taken to social services, but then Lindsay decides to take care of him.. When Evan sees her, he greets her happily as if he had seen her a few days ago. After this case, Kinns and Tracy get the medal of honour, and Tracy asks to be decorated by Nolasco, and she enjoys every minute of his humiliation. After the case, Kinns says that Fernández, the agent who replaced her, is to be moved to Team B. Tracy thinks that she will continue with the cold cases as it gives her more time with her family, but she will have the freedom to do some active cases with her old team.

In the last chapter Tracy travels to China, and as I already guessed, Elle Chin is there with her aunt, Gloria. When Tracy confronts her, Gloria says that she did it to protect the girl as she was very unhappy and whenever she had to go home, she cried, and that applied to both her parents. Bobby only learnt about Elle living in China recently. Tracy says that she can't do anything as China and United States do not have an agreement, so she just came here to see if she was right.

I loved the book. Very intense and interesting.
