Linda and Aroha get to Rata Station, and Linda is happy to see a tiny change in her daughter's spirits. The two women are welcome by the family. Cat and Chris are now married, but they still live in the wooden hut whereas Carol and her family are in the stone house. Carol has four children, two boys and two girls. Cat is worried about her son, Robin. The boy is senstive and wants to become an actor, and even though Cat and Chris have nothing against it, they do not know how to help him fulfill his dream. Linda suggests the boy go to high school. Cat says that she agrees, but Robin won't leave Rata Station as he is in love with March Jensch, Mara's daughter.
March lives with her family in the Maori village, and she is greatly influenced by her grandmother Jane. The girl, like her grandmother, loves arithmentic and numbers, and she has a very direct way of considering things. What she doesn't see is that Robin loves her. When Aroha and Robin visit her to invite her to Dunedin to see a play, she first refuses and Aroha can see how beautiful she is. March has a brother, Peta, who sounds more approachable.
