SPOILERS!!!
After finishing the exams and attending Isabella's wedding, Aroha starts her trip to the area where the Terraces are. Bao goes with her, but as he has no money, he has to travel steerage, and once on the island, there is no room for him in the carriage, so he has to walk to the village.
Once in Te Wairoa, Aroha is welcome by Koro, the young man who went to the school to hire her, and they get on like a house on fire. Bao reaches the village the day after, and McCrae, the Scottish owner of the hotel, hires him.
The novel then goes forward in time, and it is 1886. Aroha leads a happy life in Te Wairoa, and she and Koro are engaged to be married. Then McCrae hires Vera Carrigan's company, and she is happy to see her cousin, Robin. From her mother she knows who Vera Carriagan is and how she went between Linda and Joe. Robin is uncomfortable and embarrased when Vera often makes her perform lewd scenes and even he has to dress up as a woman. Now that Aroha sees him perform, he is willing to do anything to keep Vera sweet so that she cuts him som slack and he doesn't have to do things that make him ashamed. Aroha asks him why he doesn't write to Cat and Chris as they have been very worried. I have to say that I find Robin too cowardly, and I can't understand why he sticks to Vera and the others.
