SPOILERS!!!
I think I know who killed Mickey Brown!!! I'm pretty sure I'm certain.
Lockyer thinks that the crime is linked to something in the past, which connects to Helen's suicide. From the local woman who runs the shop, Maureen, who used to babysit for the Ferrises, he learns that around the time Harry was thirteen, he changed. The day of his birthday his father failed to celebrate the event with his son and wife and went to sell one of his vintage cars. After that, things changed, and there were lots of rows between Roland and his wife, and Harry turned taciturn. Maureen also remembers that one day the police were there, but she did not know what for.
Lockyer tries to find out why Helen killed herself and why the police called in, but both father and son claim not to remember. Gem then tries to find out, and in a local newspaper she discovers an article about an eight-year-old girl, Lucy White, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident, and from the paint traces found on the bridge railings, the police thought the car was an old one. Lockyer thinks that Roland must have been questioned as he owns a lot of old cars, and that is what he did not want to say. That makes him look guilty.
Lockyer and Gem go to see Lucy White's father, who is an alcoholic and lives in terrible conditions. He says that the police didn't find anything, but he remembers overhearing the family liaiason officer mention Ferris. The man says that his wife left him because it was his fault Lucy was killed. Lucy usually came from riding practice with a friend, both riding their bicycles, but that day one of Lucy's tyres was flat and she called him, asking him to pick her up as her friend was not in either, but he refused and told her to walk. His wife is now remarried, and his other children have their own lives, even changed their sunarmes to their mother's maiden name. When he mentions that one of his children is Vicky, I knew that she is the research assistant, Tor. Tor must be a shortened form of Victoria. My theory is that it was Harry, who was driving the car, who killed Lucy. Somehow Tor must have found out that it was Harry, and not Roland, and he went to find a job there. So since Mickey claimed to be Harry and Roland believed him, she had no reason not to think he was not Harry. So she must have killed him.
Now Lockyer and Gem go to question Roland because they think that Roland killed the little girl, but he keeps saying that he did not do anything as he was in the car fair with another car, and Harry also says that they are wrong. I am sure my hunch is correct.
Lockyer has also found out that Mickey went to the same school as Harry. In the school there is a picture of the whole class, and Michael Brown is there, but with a different surname. When Lockyer asks Maureen, she remembers that he was in one of Harry's birthday parties, and she felt sorry for him becuase it was clear that the boy was not well cared for, and the other children were unkind to him. So that is the reason why Mickey knew things about Harry and could pretend to be him when he was hiding from Sean Hannington.
