Stay Buried 6 - The End (Pages 288 - end)

RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

I was right in my guesses. Before Lockyer manages to discover the truth, there are a few surprises.

Lockyer talks to Ferris again and questions him about a car seen in a photograph in the house. It is a green car, just the same colour as the one that run over Lucy White. Ferris finally admits that was the car, and he says that Helen left a suicide note. He was the one who was driving the car that day with Harry as a passenger. She ran over the girl and panicked. Helen wanted to go to the police but Roland persuaded not to go, and he had the car painted another colour. In the end, Helen couldn't bear the guilt and killed herself.

Another element that leads Lockyer to the truth is the tape with Voyage, voyage, found on Mickie Brown. When the tape is analysed, they find a fingerprint belonging to Malcolm White, Lucy's dad. The man is arrested, but he claims to know nothing about a crime or Mickie Brown. Lockyer keeps going through all the evidence gathered during the investigation of Lucy White's death, and when she sees the photograph of Lucy White with her best friend, he is horrified when he recognises the girl. The little girl looks like Hedy. He remembers the phone conversation he had with her, when he told her about an accident. Then Hedy told him that the motive for the crime might have been revenge.

When Malcolm confirms that Lucy's best friend was Hedy, Lockyer is certain that Hedy was the killer all along. She must have found Helen's suicide note, and she wanted revenge for ther friend. When Lockyer confronts her in prison, Hedy keeps denying the whole thing. She says that the person who she has never forgotten is her sister who died of leukaemia when she was five. Lucy was her friend, and she felt guilty for having gone to the dentist that day, but then she was young, and she hasn't thought of her as an adult. It is her sister who was her role model and the person who she has missed most. Lockyer does not believe her, and he leaves Hedy totally broken.

That image haunts him, and he starts thinking about sisters, so he wonders about Lucy's sister. When he goes to ask Malcolm, the man says that Vicky has come to see him just occasionally. She was clever, and the last time he saw her, she was looking for something in Lucy's old room. When he shows a photograph of Tor, the man recognises her. Now Lockyer is convinced that it was Tor, who killed Mickie, as he was the one who believed he was Harry.

Lockyer and Gem rush to the Ferris's property as they remember that Tor planned to visit Roland then. They get there when Tor is in the room, and they arrest her when she was close to a paperknife. The woman then says that it was Harry, who killed her sister, and she read Helen's letter, explaining that she allowed Harry to drive the car, and he ran over Lucy. Tor can't forgive the fact that they left her sister to die. Her injuries wouldn't have killed Lucy, but the impact pushed her to the stream where she drowned.

Tor is arrested, and when she is questioned, she refuses to confess, but Lockyer makes her see that it will be better for her own children as she will get a reduce sentence.

Harry also has to testify about his own involvement in Lucy's death. Roland begs Lockyer to let him take the blame, but Lockyer says that he can't do much. When he tells Harry what his father has said, Harry states that he does not want more lies. Secrets have made him suffer too much, so he comes clen with it. Two days later his father dies.

That means that Hedy is released some weeks later. Lockyer picks her up from prison, and he has arranged for her to stay with his parents on the farm. Roland has left her the house he had in France, which was a surprise for everyone. The first days Hedy is free, she is overwhelmed and confused, but she gradually comes to terms with her new situation. Lockyer has also found the car her former boyfriend stole from her, and it is in the same condition. On the farm Lockyer's parents welcome her, and John helps her with the car, and they manage to repair. A week or so later, Matt invites her to dinner, and they manage to talk. Lockyer apologises for the way he treated her, but she won't hear her out as she is nothing but grateful. Hedy does not know what to do. She says that she wants to go and see her mother in Spain. Lockyer says that she may go to live in the house Roland left her in France, but she is not certain. That night Hedy and Matt kiss. The next day his mother calls to say that Hedy is gone suddenly, and Matt is disappointed. He thinks that she is running away from him, and he wonders whether to call her, but he decides against it.

The book ends up with Matt at home, continuing with his redecoration. Then his neighbour, Mrs Musprat appears, looking very scared.

I wonder what will happen in the second book. Will Hedy reappear? Why has she left so suddenly? What is wrong with Mrs Musprat?
