The novel is set in Wiltshire and there are different locations that are used in the book. Wiltshire is a county in South West England. It borders Gloucestershire to the north, Oxfordshire to the north-east, Berkshire to the east, Hampshire to the south-east, Dorset to the south, and Somerset to the west.


Melksham is a town and civil parish on the River Avon in Wiltshire.


Devizes is a market town and civil parish in Wiltshire. It developed around Devizes Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle.


Bradford-on-Avon is a town and civil parish in west Wiltshire, near the border with Somerset. The town's canal, historic buildings, shops, pubs and restaurants make it popular with tourists.

Orcheston is where Matt Lockyer lives. Orcheston is a civil parish and village in Wiltshire, England, lying on Salisbury Plain.

Pewsey is where Lucy lived and was run over. Pewsey is a village and civil parish at the centre of the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire, about 6 miles south of Marlborough and 71 miles west of London.

The tape that gives Lockyer a clue contained 'Voyage, Voyage' by Desireless. "Voyage, voyage"  is a song by French singer Desireless. Sung entirely in French, the song transcended the language barrier on the music charts and became a huge international success between 1986 and 1988, reaching the top position in more than ten countries across Europe.

Hedy recovers her car at the end of the book, an Austin Allegro. The Austin Allegro is a small family car that was manufactured by the Austin-Morris division of British Leyland (BL) from 1973 until 1982.
