Civil gets worried when Ty, her ex-boyfriend, tells her that there is a research about the birth-control drug that the girls are given. This study has proved that the drug develops cancer, and when she reads the researach, she decides to stop the shots. After all, the girls are not sexually active.
Civil is happy that thanks to her mother the Williams family can move to a nice three-bedroom apartment, and the father, Mace, finds a job in a factory. Things are going well, especially as Civil manages to get Erica in summer school. And India passes a placement test to go to school.
Then something terrible happens. Civil's boss, Linda Seager, turns up at the Williams' apartment, and Mace and the grandmother sign an authorization, and the girls end up in hospital and have a tubal ligation done. Civil finds them crying, and she is horrified. Mace and the grandmother did not know what they signed as they are illiterate.
Civil is determined to do something against the clinic she works for. So she goes to Ty's parents, who are lawyers, and they bring in a young lawyer, Lou Feld, to sue the clinic. Civil has her doubts because Lou is too young, but he is determined to help the Williams. So the procedure starts, and as a consequence, Civil loses her job, which she knew would come sooner or later.
